Your church already runs on messages. Here is how to text well.

Email gets ignored. Social media buries your post. But a text message gets read, usually within minutes, by almost everyone you send it to. Studies of SMS put read rates around 96%, most of them within three minutes. For a church trying to reach its people, that is hard to beat.

The problem is not whether to text your congregation. Most already do, through scattered personal WhatsApp groups. The problem is doing it in a way that is organised, respectful and actually helpful.

What to actually send

Not every thought needs a text. The messages that earn their place tend to be:

• Reminders for services, meetings, rehearsals and events
• Follow-ups to first-timers and members who have been away
• Care notes, a word of encouragement, a prayer, a check-in
• Practical alerts, a venue change, a cancelled midweek, a giving update

If a message would not be welcome on your own phone, do not send it to three hundred people.

1. Segment. Send to the group that needs it. The choir does not need the ushers' rehearsal reminder.
2. Be brief. One clear message, one clear action. Long texts get skimmed.
3. Time it. A Saturday evening reminder beats one sent Sunday at dawn.
4. Use a sender name people recognise. Messages from "GraceChapel" get opened; messages from an unknown number get ignored.
5. Respect consent. Let people opt out, and honour it. Trust is easy to lose and slow to rebuild.
